In the previous century the ship watchman lived at this look out site to spot and assist the sailing ships safely into the Tromoya passage around the dreaded tight turn at “Gitmartangen.” The “Gitmargangen” caused many a shipwrecks during fierce seas. There was also a toll station at the inside of the island. One of the best known and protected shipwrecks lies on the ocean floor by “Gitmartangen.”The slave ship Fredensborg went down during a storm in 1768. Fredensborg was in the triangle trade from Denmark and Norway to the gold coast of Africa through the Caribbean islands, St. Thomas and St. Croix with slaves before it returned to Europe.
